How Ohio counts school hours
Schools must be open for instruction with pupils in attendance, lunch and breakfast excluded, for the hours in ORC 3313.48. The hours may include up to the equivalent of two school days of parent-teacher conferences, two of teacher professional meetings, and morning and afternoon recesses of up to 15 minutes each for grades K to 6. Community schools have a separate 920-hour rule without those extras, which this page doesn’t cover.
| Grades | Each year |
|---|---|
| Half-day kindergarten | 455 hours |
| All-day kindergarten | 910 hours |
| Grades 1 to 6 | 910 hours |
| Grades 7 to 12 | 1,001 hours |
Time between classes counts, according to the Department of Education and Workforce. Ohio counts hours, not days: closures matter only if they push the year under the hours. Every school adopts an online make-up plan by August 1, and it can cover up to three days of closures (ORC 3313.482).
Questions about instructional time in Ohio
How many hours does an Ohio school year need?
455 hours for half-day kindergarten, 910 for all-day kindergarten and grades 1 to 6, and 1,001 for grades 7 to 12 (ORC 3313.48).
Does recess count toward Ohio hours?
For grades K to 6, one morning and one afternoon recess count, up to 15 minutes each. The law speaks of recess periods of not more than 15 minutes, so this page counts 15 minutes of a longer one; the department’s guidance doesn’t say, and your district may count none of it. Grades 7 to 12 get no recess allowance. Lunch never counts.
Do conference days count?
Up to the equivalent of two days of parent-teacher conferences and two days of teacher professional meetings count, even though pupils don’t attend. Each counts as an equivalent day: your total hours divided by the days you are open. Mark them on the calendar and the calculator adds up to two of each at that average.
What happened to calamity days?
Ohio counts hours now, not days. A closure only matters if it takes the year below the hours, so the cushion above tells you how many you can absorb. Online make-up lessons, under the plan each school adopts by August 1, can cover up to three days.
How long is a school day in Ohio?
Ohio sets yearly hours, not a daily length. Spread over 180 days, 910 hours is just over 5 hours a day and 1,001 hours is about 5 hours 34 minutes, lunch excluded.
